CONSTRUCTION TRADES TEACHER

REPORTS TO: High School Principal 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Teacher contract as established by the Board of Education. Salary and benefits to be determined according to the district salary schedule and Board policy.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Construction Trades Teacher provides classroom, laboratory, and work-site instruction for high school students in the area of construction trades and building technology. This Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)-approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) program prepares students with the technical knowledge, employability skills, and hands-on experience necessary for entry into the workforce, apprenticeships, military service, or post-secondary education in construction-related fields.

The instructor is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and industry-aligned learning environment that promotes student achievement, leadership development, professionalism, and career readiness.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must hold or be eligible to obtain Missouri Career Education Teacher Certification in Construction Trades, Building Trades, or a related Career and Technical Education field through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Career Education Temporary Authorization Certificate (CTAC) pathway.

To qualify for the Missouri Career Education certification route, applicants must meet one of the following DESE-approved eligibility requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and four thousand (4,000) hours of closely related occupational experience obtained within the past ten (10) years; or
• Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and five thousand (5,000) hours of closely related occupational experience obtained within the past ten (10) years; or
• No degree and six thousand (6,000) hours of closely related occupational experience obtained within the past ten (10) years.

Additional qualifications include:

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Missouri Career Education Temporary Authorization Certificate (CTAC) and progress toward Initial Career Education Certification (ICEC)
• Willingness to complete required college coursework and professional development required by DESE for certification renewal and advancement
• Ability to work collaboratively with Salem R-80 School District administration and assigned mentor teacher as part of the DESE Career Education certification process
• Demonstrated knowledge of construction trades, building technology, safety procedures, blueprint reading, construction math, and industry standards
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, business partners, contractors, and community members
• Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
• Ability to integrate instructional technology and employability skills into instruction
• Successful completion of required criminal background checks and screenings
• Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements preferred or willingness to obtain if required for transportation of students to job sites or work-based learning locations.

 

CERTIFICATION SUPPORT:

Salem R-80 School District will support the selected candidate in pursuing and maintaining Missouri Career Education certification through DESE-approved pathways, including mentorship, instructional support, and coordination with approved educator preparation or certification programs as required under Missouri Career and Technical Education guidelines.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain course syllabi, curriculum maps, lesson plans, and instructional materials aligned to Missouri CTE standards and industry expectations
• Provide instruction through classroom, laboratory, and hands-on construction experiences
• Teach construction-related skills including, but not limited to, carpentry, framing, blueprint reading, tool safety, construction math, materials usage, and workplace readiness
• Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse student learning needs
• Create a positive learning environment that promotes student engagement, responsibility, and achievement
• Monitor and assess student performance and maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, competencies, and progress
• Maintain discipline and appropriate student behavior in classrooms, laboratories, job sites, and during field experiences
• Supervise students at all times and enforce all safety procedures and district policies

Program Management Responsibilities

• Maintain program facilities, tools, equipment, and instructional materials in safe and operational condition
• Prepare purchase requests and maintain inventory and repair records
• Coordinate and supervise student participation in construction projects, work-based learning opportunities, internships, and job-site experiences
• Assist in the development and maintenance of advisory committees and partnerships with local contractors, businesses, unions, and post-secondary institutions
• Promote student participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), including SkillsUSA
• Remain informed of current industry trends, methods, materials, technology, and safety standards
• Participate in curriculum review and continuous program improvement efforts
• Maintain compliance with DESE and district requirements for Career and Technical Education programs

Professional Responsibilities

• Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, conferences, and required trainings
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff to support student success
• Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and program activities
• Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct in all work-related activities
• Support district goals, initiatives, and the mission of Salem R-80 School District
• Perform other duties as assigned by the administration

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee must regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, lift, carry, and use hands and tools associated with construction activities. The employee must be capable of lifting objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and working in indoor and outdoor environments. Visual acuity, depth perception, hearing, and manual dexterity are required for safe operation of tools and equipment.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy and district administrative procedures.
